eXp's NextHome Deal Is the Biggest Recruiting Signal of the Year. Here Is Your Playbook

2026-09-10 8 min read By Coach Randy Byrd

On May 7, 2026, eXp Realty closed its acquisition of NextHome and stepped into the franchise business for the first time in its history. If you follow the news, you saw the header notice that eXp entered the franchise business with the NextHome acquisition and you moved on. Company moves blur together in a consolidation year, and I get that. But I want to slow this one down, because eXp is the one brokerage in America that built its entire growth engine on how well it attracts agents, and what it just told the market is a recruiting playbook. Here is what happened, what the numbers say, and the moves it should trigger in your recruiting this quarter.

What eXp actually did

eXp acquired NextHome on May 7, 2026, and that is a bigger deal than a standard merger because of what NextHome is. NextHome is a franchise company, which means eXp is now in the business of selling the right to use its platform to brokers who own their own shops, not just signing individual agents into a cloud office.

The framing coming out of eXp leadership is instructive. The pitch became what its leaders describe as maximum optionality for agents and brokers: come in as an agent, come in as a team, buy a franchise, plug your existing brokerage in, pick the lane that fits. On its surface that is a pivot. Underneath it, it is an admission about where real estate recruiting actually finds its growth.

The number that changes everything

Then the second quarter numbers landed, and they are the part I want you to hold onto. eXp reported a record second quarter with about 1.4 billion dollars in revenue and 132,497 transactions, while agent count reached about 82,332, up just about 1% from a year earlier, according to the coverage of the record quarter for eXp Realty. Keep that 1% in your head, because it is the whole story. The agent headcount barely moved, but revenue and transactions set records. That is not an agent-growth quarter. That is a productivity and a team-growth quarter.

And here is the most direct evidence, the number I review with every leader I coach: 41% of the new agents who joined eXp that quarter came in as teams. Read that again, because almost nobody in the recruiting conversation is talking about it. The largest agent-attraction machine in real estate, the company that built itself by recruiting individuals one at a time, is now telling us that its growth is coming from teams, and from leaders who want optionality about how they plug in. That is the signal. And it is aimed straight at you.

What this means if you lead a team

Here is the hard coaching truth that this number exposes. If a company that mastered one-at-a-time agent attraction is now getting 41% of its growth from teams, then your one-at-a-time recruiting is fighting the trend of the entire industry. You can keep doing the slow math of talking to one agent at a time about a split and an office, and you will still grow. But you will be swimming upstream against where the market is consolidating, and you are capping yourself.

The way to grow your real estate team in this environment is not to recruit harder or call later at night. It is to build an offer worth moving a whole team for, and to recruit leader to leader. When a team leader moves, the people follow. When you get that one leader, you get the production, the referrals, the culture, and the future pipeline of that entire operation at once. That is real estate recruiting at its most efficient, and it is exactly what the largest companies are now betting on.

Let me be direct about the practical work, because I do not want you to walk away with an insight and no method.

First, stop building your attraction around the individual. Build it around the leader. Every piece of content, every conversation, and every follow-up should speak to a team leader who is weighing what their people are worth and what the next structure could give them. That is how to attract real estate agents to your team without chasing them: you become the place a leader can see a better future for everyone they lead.

Second, sell optionality, not a lane. eXp is not selling agents on one specific deal. It is selling them the freedom to pick the lane that fits them right now, and you can copy that without a franchise. If you can tell a leader exactly how they would plug in, what the ramp looks like, what their people keep, and what changes if their business grows by half, you stop being a broker and start being a choice. That is what turns real estate recruiting from a pitch into a magnet.

Third, and this is the one most leaders skip, build the retention system first and recruit against it. Every team you attract is only worth something if it stays together once it gets to you. The companies winning in 2026 are linking attraction to a documented onboarding and leadership structure so the team that moves in, stays in. When you can prove that, your recruiting gets easier every quarter, because the leaders you attracted become the proof you recruit with.

The bigger board: consolidation is recruiting

Put the eXp story next to the rest of 2026 and the picture gets sharper. Compass completed its merger with Anywhere in January to form Compass International Holdings, the largest brokerage on earth. Real Brokerage agreed to acquire RE/MAX for about 880 million dollars to create a combined group of roughly 180,000 agents. The theme is not complicated: capital is consolidating up into whoever has the strongest infrastructure, because infrastructure is what attracts agents at scale.

Here is the uncomfortable mirror for every independent team leader and broker reading this. Those giant companies are not buying each other because the real estate market is shrinking. They are buying each other because the teams that produce the volume keep moving toward whoever gives them the most options, the best platform, and the clearest path to growth. If you want to grow your real estate team in that world, you are not competing on your logo. You are competing on the strength of your system.

You do not need corporate billions to build that system. You need a brand position that makes your team the obvious choice, a pipeline that brings inbound interest instead of cold calls, a conversion process that closes leader to leader, and a retention culture that keeps what you attract. That is the entire practice, and it is exactly what team leader coaching and the Attract System are built to hand you.

The straight Coach take

So what do I want you to take from a franchise deal and a record quarter? Not a stock tip, and not water-cooler gossip. I want you to take the 41%. The biggest agent-attraction company in real estate is now growing from teams, and it is telling you that the future of real estate recruiting runs through the leader, not the individual call sheet. Every quarter you keep recruiting one agent at a time while the industry consolidates around whole teams is a quarter you are ceding to somebody who built a stronger system.

Your move

Stop reading this and pick the one leader you have been meaning to talk to, and book that call this week. But before you dial, build the offer that makes the conversation easy: a clear value position, a documented structure, and a retention plan you can show. That is team leader coaching in its raw form, and it is how you turn industry news into the best recruiting quarter you have had.
