Should I Switch Brokerages? That Is the Wrong First Question
Let me be direct with you. Somewhere right now, an agent at a big brokerage is asking a question out loud for the first time: should I switch brokerages? Maybe that agent is you.
You joined with excitement, anda year later you sit in the office, feeling lost, unsupported, and flat-out broke. No training. No leads. No one on the other end of the phone. And the voice in your head keeps saying the problem must be the company, so the fix must be switching companies.
Before you resign, transfer your license, and hand your production to another platform, hear me out. The answer to should I switch brokerages is rarely the name on the door. And I am going to show you what agents searching this question right now are actually discovering, because it might save you from the most expensive mistake of your career.
The search thousands of agents are making right now
One of the most active discussions agents are having this year started with a simple thread on r/realtors: a brand-new agent at a major brokerage, completely lost, no training, no office support, and no paycheck, asking whether to leave. The comments that followed were telling. Other agents did not say leave. They said find a team that will provide leads, train you through experience, and actually be accountable for your growth. You can read the full thread here.
That advice lines up with the industry data on why agents quit. One of the most-shared analyses this year found that agents whose businesses depended on spending 80 to 90 percent of their time prospecting were the ones drowning when the market slowed. The full breakdown of why so many agents are quitting in 2026 is here.
Read those two together and a pattern emerges. Agents are not quitting because their split was two points too low. They are quitting because their lead model was weak, nobody trained them how to fix it,and they had nobody to turn to. The logo was never the problem. The support system was.
Here is the truth about switching
I have coached leaders for13 years and built an organization of1,200+ agents, so I watch people switch companies every week. Here is what I know: most agents do not have a brokerage problem. They have a support problem, a training problem, anda systems problem, and they are planning to fix all three by changing the logo on their business cards.
Switching without changing your support structure gives you the same business, same habits, and same results, just with a different desk. I have seen that movie hundreds of times. It never ends well.
But hear the other side too, because it matters. Sometimes you absolutely should leave. If your broker is unreachable, if promised training never shows up, if leaders recruit you with lead promises they cannot name or quantify, that is not a reason to stay. It is a reason to run. The point is not stay no matter what. The point is leave with a destination plan, not a runaway plan.
The four questions every agent searching this should ask first
Before you make the call, run yourself through these four questions. They are the same four I give every agent before they switch anything.
1. Do I have a written lead system or a hope? If nobody can show you a funnel, a budget, and a process with numbers attached, you do not have a system. You have a wish.
2. Is anyone accountable for my numbers? A leader who knows your activity, checks your pipeline, and will not let you coast is worth more than any split in the country. If nobody can name the accountability, there is no accountability.
3. What does the training actually look like? Not a promise. A calendar. A curriculum. Actual people who sit with you,and teach you how to run the business, not just how to list a house.
4. What happens when I succeed? Is there a ceiling on you or a path through you? The best leaders grow past themselves, and they want you to grow with them.
If you cannot pass those four at your current brokerage, you have found your answer, regardless of the name on the door. And if you are a leader reading this, here is your mirror: can your own agents answer those four questions about your team? That is how to attract real estate agents to your team. That is team leader coaching with teeth. The split was never the recruiting pitch. The system is.
What this means for real estate recruiting
Here is where this gets interesting for every leader trying to grow your real estate team. Agents are searching should I switch brokerages in record numbers right now, and that search is your opportunity. What they want is not a better split. They want proof that somebody runs a team with real systems, real training, and real accountability.
When you can show that, you attract agents to your brokerage without chasing a single one. When you cannot, no lead vendor, no sign-on bonus, and no recruiting script will save you. Your message stops being join our team and becomes here is the operating system you have been looking for. That is the difference between real estate recruiting that churns agents and real estate recruiting that builds a legacy.
My take
When an agent asks me whether they should switch brokerages, I want them to ask themselves one question first: is there a leader here who will hold me to a standard higher than I hold myself? If yes, stay and grow. If no, it is time to go find that leader.
That is the entire Attract Boss philosophy. Leadership, systems, and accountability, in that order. Everything else is decoration.
